The president of the Gusen Memorial Committee, Mrs. Martha Gammer, gave the memorial address along with a regional commemoration on July 5, 2014 dedicated to all victims of World War I that was declared 100 years ago. The commemoration was organized by the regional detachment of the Upper Austrian Veterans Society (OÖKB) for the communities of Luftenberg, St. Georgen/Gusen, and Langenstein at the new “Denk.Statt Johann Gruber” in front of the Parish church of which the regional memorial for the victims of the two world wars became part of in 2013. President Gammer reminded beneath the 118 victims of the local Parish especially to the thousands of Serbs and Russians that died in the nearby POW camp at Mauthausen between 1914 and 1918. We were also very touched to learn that a lot of soldiers from different countries that fought on the side of the Austro.Hungarian Empire became victims of the Gusen concentration camp some 25 years after the end of this war.
