According to a list published by the Spanish Ministry of Justice on 9 August 2019, the majority of the 4427 currently registered Spaniards was murdered in Concentration Camp Gusen. Extermination of Spaniards started at Gusen in January 1941.

Austrian federal president, Dr. Alexander Van der Bellen, was the first Austrian federal president to take part in an international commemoration at the KZ Gusen Memorial in Langenstein, Austria on May 6, 2017. President Van der Bellen honored with his participation the biggest group of Nazi concentration camp victims on Austrian territory 72 years after the end of World War II.

The secretary general of Amnesty International Austria, Mr. Heinz Patzelt spoke at this year´s international commemoration at Gusen on May 14, 2016. He reminded in the presence of the last survivors of KZ Gusen that we all have to treat todays refugees with adequate dignity and that especially the Austrian government is urged to consider relvant hunmanitarian standards in its respective policies.
