GUNSKIRCHEN Extermination Camp

by Wiebe van IJken

MAP OF GUNSKIRCHEN
EXTERMINATION CAMP

Dr. Bacs Pal, a survivor, has kept a diary during his stay in the camp which contains a sketch with a short description of the situation.
Sketch of Gunskirchen extermination camp by Dr. Bacs Pal
At the right side is the highway (ORSZAGUT) that is crossed by the local road from Gunskirchen to Saag. The most right barrack is the kitchen barrack (Konyha) with on the other side of the road the barracks 1 to 6. In between the latrine (LATRINA) and the "Todesberg" (hill of death) (HULAHEG) was barrack no. 2 where Dr. Bacs Bal with his father and uncle lived from April 24, until May 8, 1945.

The text that was written by the sketch is:

"We reached Gunskirchen after a three day walk. The road crossed a big forest. In the middle of the forest, after about 2 miles, the camp is located. It is not finished yet. 1 or 2 barracks are still missing. All the barracks are made of wood, and designed for 800 to 1,000 people. They have a stone floor. We were housed in barrack 2. In this barrack were at first 1,500 and later 2,400 people crowded together."
