New Monument dedicated to KZ Gusen III at Lungitz

Survivors honoring their comrades at the inauguration at Lungitz The triangular shape of the stone represents the area of former KZ Gusen III Local and provincial representatives with KZ Gusen survivors at the inauguration at Lungitz

Along with the local-international commemoration, a new monument was inaugurated on May 7, 2000, at Lungitz by Mrs. Angela Orthner, President of the Provincial Council of Upper Austria, in the presence of KZ Gusen survivors, Mr. Gunther Truebswasser, Representative of the Provincial Council of Upper Austria, Dr. Heinz Steinkellner, head of the district of Perg, Mr. Hubert Woeckinger, Mayor of Katsdorf, and many people form the local population.

The monument was initiated by Mr. Leo Reichl, head of "Heimatverein Katsdorf" (the local historical association) on the site of KZ Gusen III. The land now belongs to the Austrian Federal Railways. Special contributions were also given by the municipality of Katsdorf, the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Provincial Government of Upper Austria and our local-international committee.

The granite monument was produced by the stone industry currently operating in Gusen. The stone´s triangular shape represents the triangular area of former KZ Gusen III and shows a sketch of the layout of the former satellite camp of Mauthausen-Gusen II.
The inscription at the new monument for KZ Gusen III
The inscription reads: "This place was occupied by the former concentration camp of Lungitz with its huge bakery. The camp was named KZ Gusen III and it was a satellite of Mauthausen with some 275 inmates. Construction started in June 1943. The camp was liberated by American troops in 1945. The buildings of the concentration camp were removed between 1946 and 1953. The area of the former camp was leveled to its current appearance in 1957."

This new monument is the only reminder of the concentration camp which played a key-role in the operation of the camps at Langenstein (Gusen I), St. Georgen/Gusen (Gusen II) and Mauthausen (central camp) at the end of the war. KZ Gusen III´s bakery served all these camps and the logistics for the underground "BERGKRISTALL" aircraft plant at St. Georgen/Gusen.

More detailled information about that camp can also be found (in German) at a site dedicated to KZ-Nebenlager Gusen III by Heimatverein Katsdorf und Umgebung.
