The Governor of Upper Austria
present at Gusen commemoration

Along with the 2001 commemoration we had the great honour to welcoming the Governor of the Province of Upper Austria, Landeshauptmann Dr. Joseph Puehringer, who was present at the local-international commemoration at Gusen for the first time.
Governor, Landeshauptmann Dr. Joseph Puehringer was the first Governor of Upper Austria to attend a local-international commemoration at the KZ Gusen Memorial. Italian delegations of the city partner towns of Empoli (FI) and Sesto San Giovanni (MI) were attending with hundreds of other Italian participants.
Although this was the first time, an Upper Austrian Governor participated in a KZ Gusen commemoration, we herewith thank the Province of Upper Austria and especially Dr. Puehringer for the many years of continuous support of our committee´s memorial initiative. Without the active support of the Provincial Government, we wouldn´t have been in a position to organize our high quality commemoration for survivors, their families, the families of KZ Gusen victims, and the local population every year.

The 2001 commemoration got a distinct Upper Austrian touch this year, because there was given a special tribute to an Upper Austrian victim of KZ Gusen I. The square in front of the KZ Gusen Memorial was dedicated by the Community of Langenstein to "Papa Gruber" - the Saint of Gusen who saved so many lives in the "Hell of Hells" at KZ Gusen.
Students of the secondary school at "Seitenstetten" Monastery contributed actively to the commemoration along with their school project. Vicarius Joseph Mayer, Governor Dr. Joseph Puehringer, Sektionschef Dr. Wolf Szymanski and Mayor Ernst Hutsteiner dedicating the place in front of the KZ Gusen Memorial to "Papa Gruber" - one of the Saints of Gusen.
