Joint Commemorations of Mauthausen Memorial and Gusen Memorial Committee at Gusen

February 9th, 2024 Commemoration at Gusen in 2023

From May 2024, the Mauthausen Memorial and the Gusen Memorial Committee (GMC) will organize the annual local-international commemorations at Gusen jointly.

This new cooperation is a logical consequence of the increased commitment of the Mauthausen Memorial to the remembrance work concerning the former KL Gusen complex of concentration camps in recent years (see, for example, the purchase of substantial pieces of land by the Republic of Austria in Gusen to expand the KL Gusen memorial sites and the related local-national-international participation process for the design goals of the future Gusen memorial sites in the years 2022 to 2023).

This development marks indeed a milestone in the tradition of the local-international commemorations at Gusen, as the remembrance work in Gusen was carried out essentially by the GMC together with the last survivors for almost three decades since 1995.

The annual local-national-international commemoration will now take place mainly on the recently acquired former roll call square of KL Gusen I and will end after a joint procession at the Gusen Memorial that was erected by survivors in the 1960-ties to prevent the complete erasure of the memory of the former KL Gusen complex.

We are convinced that this partnership-based new approach will carry the work of remembering the ten thousands of victims of the former KL Gusen complex into a good future in a worthy manner.

The next international commemoration will be held on May 4, 2024 starting at 05:00 p.m. at the roll call square of former KL Gusen I.
